A pain in the…..

11 Jan

I have learnt the hard and painful way what my 2013 resolution is. My body has let me know, very loudly and clearly, that I need to get serious about stretching and core strength. This morning I experienced seriously painful lower back muscle spasms that initially incapacitated me when they began. You know when your back seizes up when you’re getting up or turning to do something and mid-bend or twist it strikes……and you’re too scared to move because any little movement sets off the spasms again? Yep, that was me this morning.

It’s not the first time I’ve experienced this but it’s been a long time. And the reason? Very tight muscles in the glutes, hammies and lower back. And no stretching or core strengthening work.

Fortunately I also know what to do and so I implemented the treatment protocol straightaway. Sitting or staying immobile are the worst things to do so apart from my hairdressers appointment this afternoon I’ve remained mobile. Anti-inflammatories and regular icing. And soon I’ll be taking stronger painkillers and heading to bed because as anyone who knows me well knows, anything stronger than Panadol wipes me out.

So a few unscheduled rest days coming up, though I will be walking. Then hopefully some swimming next week before a gradual return to running. Oh and a stretching and core strengthening regime that I will follow religiously (hand on heart).

Once you start to up the ante in training, then it’s the 1% that you must do right. Only takes a small error to fall in a heap. This will settle down quickly with a good recovery plan. Well done to be smart from the start.

I know. You’d think I’d learn! But at least I do know what to do and I’m doing it. No stress.
