The monotony of the marathon runner

8 Mar

Session: early morning run (5.35am)

Distance: 16km
Time: 1hr 37.16min
Pace: 6.04min/km
Cals: 935
Weather: 14*c, wind – SSE, 7kph

Sleeps to marathon: 37

There was no fist pumping and channelling Rocky Balboa and eye of the tiger this morning. Instead it was a case of stumble out of bed, make a coffee hoping that it would wake me up, struggle into my running gear and blearily face the darkness outside knowing I had 16km to cover.

I enjoy running, really I do but sometimes the monotony of marathon training really gets to me. Day after day after day of running. This week my total will be 92km, some of that done early in the morning, before it gets light. Tomorrow it’s more of the same – I will run 26km.

Same same. 16km. 1h37m14s for me today as well. How funny! But I’m only training for a half-marathon so weekly mileage is about 50km per week. Yet I know exactly where you’re coming from. Kim*

That is funny re distance & time! By the time I get to the end of the week I’m just tired and having to get up and run again loses its novelty.

Yeah. I needed a kindy nap today for that very reason. Are you doing the Canberra Marathon on April 14?

Yes – it will be my 9th Canberra. It’s my hoodoo because the last one I did in 2009 and every year since then I’ve either got injured and have been returning from injury. Are you doing Canberra?

Yes. Just the half ;) I need to build up my mileage and motivation before attempting another marathon. I don’t love the loooooong runs ;)

Long runs, especially the really long ones, are hard. I try and run those ones with a friend. I ran the half last year. I’m doing the Weston Creek half marathon next weekend.

Yeah. I’ve always enjoyed the solitude that comes with running but I’m learning to appreciate the joy from running with a friend.

I’ve met two runners here in Japan: one is 66yo and a similar pace as me. The other 48yo and an inspiration as he does 2h45m but was where I am now a decade ago. So I figure with patience and perseverance I can improve.

Fingers crossed we both remain injury free!

        Good luck!

What happened to mixing up the training, swimming, gym, bike riding. A few hills, something a bit different, a change of scenery.

On this program and with work I don’t have the time. The only time I could get out off road and on hills would be the weekend. There is still another 4 runs to do.
