Goodbye and hello

1 Jan

January 1st. My last day in Melbourne, the first day of 2012. I went for my run as I have for the last 33 days – only 5km this morning as I was feeling the after effects of yesterday’s 12km plus my first hill in 9 months. And while I only had 2 wines and 1 champagne the night before, even this was enough to make me feel sluggish this morning. I was anticipating ecountering a few drunks from the night before but the morning was unusually quiet along the promenade by the Yarra. A few people looking slightly worse for wear either slowly making their way home, sitting on steps smoking or drinking energy drinks, hoping the added caffeine and sugar would make them feel better. Cleaners had been busy in the early hours as most of the rubbish had been cleaned away and the walkways hosed down, though in areas outside the casino entrances there were so many cigarette butts littering the pavement, it was disgusting.

We had breakfast at my favourite cafe, St Ali’s in South Melbourne, hidden in an alleyway, as are most of the best shops, cafes, bars and galleries in Melbourne. The staff seemed a little weary and bleary-eyed but they had been open from 5am, offering hangover breakfasts for those who needed them. Me – no need for a greasy fry up. I opted for the Super Bircher Muesli.

So it was goodbye to Melbourne and hello Canberra and home.

Goodbye to 2011 and my previous blog CJ, and hello to a new year and a new blog, One day at a time. Its a work in progress so there will be changes over time. I’m still trying to find my way around the site.
